Show down at the not so OK Corral
After a brief heiatus, we return.

Just to recap, you had located the bandit hideout, a small palace in the desert. as you snuck up on the lion-headed creatures in the courtyard, a hydra-like creature with worms instead of heads. The fading light interferes with accuracy (see below), and everyone is flat footed.

The fading light makes vision difficult for normal creatures. Those without low light vision or dark vision suffer a 20% miss chance from concealment in melee and a 50% miss chance on ranged attacks. Low light vision reduces these to 0% in melee, 20% ranged. Dark vision negates the miss chance on targets within dark vision range.

The Initiative Order for this battle is as follows:
    Oulah 19
    Verealing 17
    Osilgard 11
    Alythana 10
    Groak 9
    Ana 7
    Lion-Men 6
    Zaneak 2
    Worm Mass 2

Oulah moves silently and stealthily across the roof, and casts his entanglement spell around the gate. The plants there stir as though a wind is blowing.

Verealing steps backwards and fires a volley of arrows at the worm creature. Two arrows strike home, eliciting a high pitched wailing cry.

Osilgard spins his horse and charges the aberation (worm hydra) with a fierce cry. As he approaches one of the tentacles lashes out to strike him, but deflects off of the paladin's heavy armor. His strike cuts a deep gash along the side of the creature.

Alythana, circling overhead, sends down a bolt of lightning to strike the worm mass. The bolt strikes the center of the mass solidly.

Groak discards his tactical advantage and charges into the flailing tentacles of the aberation. One of the tentacles strikes him as he moves into range. (8 damage) His counter-attack cuts deeply into the body of the beast.

Ana chants a graceful string of consonants and calls forth a radiant light via the daylight spell, dispelling the growing shadows.

The Lion-men scatter away from the fire, spreading out across the back section of the courtyard.

Zaneak frowns at the Lion headed men, but turns away as they cower in the courtyard. He sends a grey-green beam from his hand to strike the coiling worm mass. The worm seems to sag as the bean hits it.

The worm mass lashes out with its many tentacles. four of the long tentacles latch onto Groak, biting with their many tiny teeth (7,8,5,4 damage: total 24) Two more tentacles lash into Osilgard and a third snakes towards his mount, but Osilgard skillfully protects his mount. (3,4 damage: total 7)

Initiatives for the next round are the same as this round. Welcome back, everyone.

What rhymes with Bevel? (D&D post)
The experience rewards for the encounters you have survived so far, including story rewards, total out to 4000 exp each. The savvy mathematicians out there will notice that, for those of you who have not spent any exp on item creation, you just leveled. Congratulations.

After the battle, a quick survey of the area reveals the following items:
1 piles of dust and rags*
    1 large humaniod body
1 large suit of half-plate armor
    1 large two handed sword*
several hundred bug bodies, in various states of stabbed, squished drowned, and cooked
1 medium sized composite long bow
    17 Arrows in a quiver
1 broken gourd inscribed with magical symbols*
    1 large sack containing:
    - 1 pair of seven league boots
    - 1 pair of six league boots
    - 7 basketball sized rocks
    - 1 large wheel of smelly cheese*
    *'s indicate a magical aura

Additionally, you find tracks and indications of one medium sized humanoid on the ridge by the broken gourd.
    Please post the following:
    0) whether you leveled
    1) your current hitpoints, including any gained from leveling (new hit points are added to max and current values)
    2) anything you want to do here in the immediate future
    3) your marching order for movibng on (Groak or Oulah must be in front, to track)
    4) what time you would like to arrive at the bandit camp (tomorrow evening is the earliest realistic time)

Additionally, I need to know how much magical healing will be handed out, and I need everyone who has the track feat to roll a survival check. The presence of the animals provides a +2 on this roll. Anyone who has leveled up, please email me with any changes to your character (new feats, new skill points, new hp totals, etc.) Thank you all very much.

    More trouble in the desert
The attack comes at noon. (Come on, you knew it would.)
Your first indication of trouble is a red-skinned giant shimmering into view two hundred feet ahead of you. A flying boulder strikes the ground twenty feet to the left of your party, spraying shards and sand with alarming force. A pair of arrows glance off of Osilgard's shoulder plate as a tall, skinny figure wrapped in strips of dirty cloth fades into view to the right side of the party, a strung bow in hand. There is a piercing roar as well, but no visible source.

The tactical grid is as follows:
    Front--------------------------------------------------------------------Back
    Giant<200ft>Groak;Osilgard and Verealing and Zaneak;<5ft>Oulah<5ft>Ana;Alythana

Osilgard, Verealing, and Zaneak are all in the same column of spaces, arranged with verealing on the left, zaneak in the middle, and Osilgard on the right.
The Archer is to the right of Osilgard, 50 feet away.

Please post an action for the first round of combat. I will post initiative order with the next post, as I am away from my copies of the character sheets at this moment. Thanks everyone, and enjoy

    May Review
    Hey everyone. Happy may.

So, morgan and I went to ashland over the weekend, we had a good time at the theater. Morgan got sick (strep throat, it turns out) and then Last night I spent a good deal of time vomiting and/or diarheaing which was sweet.

Anyhow, I feel better today and I hope you are all well also.

    Josh

PS. Nick, you would be so proud. While vomiting last night, I managed to vomit out my nose. EEwwww..

    Wandering in the desert
The current time is four pm. Light will hold until 7pm, and you can easily strike torchs if you wish to go further today.

Osilgard gathers corpses into a pile after his wounds are treated. (Ana’s heal check cures 2 hp and removes the arrow.)

Oulah skins one corpse and loots the others, revealing the following items:
One set of adamantine chain mail armor. (Bulky but serviceable to a medium biped)
One set of adamantine chain mail barding suitable for a large quadruped.
Two short bows, sized for large creatures. (Medium creatures can use them as longbows with a -2 hit penalty.)
Two score-count quivers with twenty seven standard arrows in total.
    One shallow stone bowl.

Zaneak’s spell reveals that the stone bowl is indeed magical, radiating moderate transmutation magic. The lingering magic in the area suggests some sort of conjuration or divination ritual, although the details are unclear.
The ritual markings on the Lamia also radiate a fading magic, faint abjuration and moderate transmutation.

Alythana awakens the sleeping animals and sees to their health. (Ana and Alythana can heal the animals injured by the chaos hammer back to full health.)

Verealing sees to Luca and assists Oulah in his lootings.

Ana sees to the health of the injured people.

Please indicate which of the above items are taken by whom. Unclaimed items will be carried in wagon #3.
Another two hours of travel begins to see the light dimming. Camping for the night is beginning to become tempting, when a chill suddenly fills the air. The winds rises abruptly, and the hairs at the backs of your necks stand on end. Zaneak, you recognise the feeling of Deep Magic, the kind of sorcery that is beyond mortals. The animals shy nervously, and Alythana feels the uneasy presence of a part of nature more ancient than any she has felt.

A wind rises to a howl, and a cruel laugh seems to echo throughout the caravan.

A few moments later, a piercing cry like a falcon sounds across the desert. Approaching you is a massive creature, with the head and wings of a falcon and the body of a lion. It stands easily twenty feet tall, and occupies as much space as a wagon. (3x3 base.)
The creature is a Heiracosphynx. It is larger than any specimen any of you has ever heard of. They are evil, cruel, and none-too-bright.

    Please post:
    1) one round of action before the heiracosphynx arrives.
    2) one rounds of action as the beast flies across the desert (clumsily) towards the caravan.
    (Distance 540 ft)
    3) one round of action once it reaches attacking distance
    (distance 180ft)

    Initiatives are as follows:
    Verealing 29
    Osilgard 23
    Sphynx 18
    Caravaneers(Luca, calvin, burt) 16
    Ana 14
    Oulah 12
    Alythana 11
    Zaneak 3

The wagons are arranged in a single file line, with 20 ft between each 15 ft long wagon. I will try to find some effective way to communicate your tactical positions based on your responses to this post.

    Thank you and enjoy.

    The road to the capital
The decision has been made to take the remains of the caravan to the capital. A night of rest and the ministrations of the cleric put everyone to full health. A couple of hours in the morning and a casting of shape wood gets the wagon working and loaded. The caravan sets out at noon with the three surviving caravaneers handling the wagons. The remaining camels are lashed to to the wagons, and the wagons are moving in a rough single file with twenty feet between each wagon like so:

    Wagon #1<--20ft-->Wagon #2<--20ft-->Wagon #3
    <-15ft-><--20ft--><-15ft-><--20ft--><-15ft->

The repaired wagon is #2 above. Luca is driving the first wagon, armed with a heavy crossbow and lightweight chain armor. The second wagon is handled by Burt, a veteran Drover equipped with a long whip and short dagger. He is unarmor. The final wagon is driven by the guard Calvin. Calvin has a long spear and is armored with several layers of stiff cloth. Each wagon is being pulled by a sturdy scrub aurocks.

You are traveling between large drifting dunes, making decent time despite the generally poor footing of the shifting sand. Please post your positions relative to the wagons, Your actions as you travel(paranoid horizon watching, lighthearted banter, complex logarythmic equations, etc.), and your state of readiness (Any drawn or loaded weapons, armor status, any long-term magical effects to generate, etc.)

    Gun Jumping with D&D
So apparently I jumped the gun on moving forward the action. I did not mean to rush people on voting, I just wasn;t seeing much in the way of discussion or planning. So here is the deal. I will wait until Monday night to continue the action while you all decide on the correct course of events.

It is important for me that you all step up on the communication when we get to the non-combat sections. COmbat has run really nicely on my end, although I will endeavor to make the tactical layouts more clear. But for the more open-ended type of decisions I would like to see more communication between you all. so please, post early and post often.

So here is where we stand. I am rewinding the action to this Point:

The bandit attack has ended, everyone has sought out the bandit horses and said final rites. Now the wreckage of the wagon is being considered and the next plan is being made. Osilgard and Verealing have proposed to seek into the desert for the bandits, while Zaneak wants to press on with the remaining valuables of the caravan. Please discuss.

Make some chatter, and come to a decision.

    April Has Arrived
As promised, Let our adventure begin with the festival of fools.

You all have come to Deeping Fast for your own reasons, but have come together in defense of the settlement. You have been hired to guard the caravan carrying a load of gold, gems, and copper to the capital city. The Queen, much beloved by the people, has decreed that no more shipments of food shall be sent to Deeping Fast until the tribute caravan arrives. The people of Deeping Fast have tightened their belts and are rationing their food as best they can, but the provisions there will run out in twenty two days. The trip across the desert will take nine days, leaving little time to dilly-dally.

We will begin on the fourth day into the desert. The caravan, carrying food and water for the journey as well as the Queen's tribute, is strung out over a couple of hundred meters. There are seventeen caravaneers along with your two dozen Camels. One of them, a sharp-eyed guardsman called Adam, has just spotted a dark cloud on the horizon. The cloud is spreading with each passing moment, a sure sign of an approaching sandstorm. This is unusual, as it is not the season for storms and the storm is moving the wrong direction: away from the salt wastes.

The storm will arrive in one minute (10 rounds). The other caravaneers are scrambling to get the camels down and cover themselves. Please indicate what you will do up until the storm hits. At a bare minimum, laying down and covering yourself will provide some protection and takes only a few seconds (1 round) to accomplish. Please include with your post a brief character description, specifically your appearance and any character traits that would be obvious in four days of close association.

Once I have everyone's posts, I will advance the action. If anyone has any questions, please email them to me. Thanks much, and have a good evening.

    Zombie Watch 2006
This morning the paper reported that a dozen unidentified people were found dead in the back of a pick up truck in texas. All of them were shot through the head. Texas => not that far from oregon. I advise everyone to make both preparations, and peace with their deity. the end may be near.
    1:28 am
    Then there were two
Its offical, I have recieved a second character. Soon, precious, very soon. On a lighter note, I saw "Dungeons and Dragons 2: The Dragon God" on TV today. I love television. It is a delight.

    Ah well. Goodnight everyone.

    Smells like waffles... OF DOOOM!!!!!!
Not really, I just coulnd't think of a compelling title.

I have seen a draft of every character except for one now, and have that one early bird finished version sitting on my computer accumulation DM favor. It looks like some people will be taking breaks over the spring break next week, so I'm hoping to get this party rocking next weekend. That means that we will be officially starting on April fools day. I encourage everyone to bask in the sheer, unrelenting joy of that.

As a note for everyone with less interest in D&D, I would ask you this: Does it seem wierd to you that a person who does not know how a postcard works would use the word "Errant" ? It has been proposed to me that I need to take more care with my diction when immitating fictional people described best by the personality flaws. Not that a lack of understanding of postcards is really a personality flaw, but still.

You can't take the sky from me.

    Kudos to Osilgard the Redeemed
Ok, people, pressure is on. Thats one character already arrived to me. who is next?
    2:19 pm
    Important to know
In warm climates with moderate exertion, a medium sized creature requires half a gallon of water each day to maintain health. A large creature requires twice that, and a small creature half.
A gallon of water weights 8 pounds. (In fact, 8.34 pounds but 1 sig fig is sufficient for my concerns.)

So close I can taste it
Six people, seven if you count me, all signed on. Its good, it really is.

I'm still waiting to see character sheets from people, but as I understand it we have:

a druid, a sorcerer, a cleric, a melee something, a ranger, and a reformed theif.

Of course, until you guys show me the money, I can;t know for certain, but I expect it is going to be good.

Hopefully we will start sometime next week.

    So far I have:
    A cleric
    A druid
An Arcane Spellcaster of indeterminant Type

My last post had the pregame details, I refer you to that for character creation. Please email me if you have questions, or if you have a character made. or I suppose, if you really want to play and haven't contacted me yet, we can probably make a space for you.

    It begins
I still only have two players, so my hope is to inspire others to join by revealing... The setup.

The PCs are employed by the governer of Deeping Fast, a mining and craft colony established three years ago by her eternal light Queen Daphne III. Monthly caravans of grain and livestock are sent to the oasis of Deeping Fast from the imperial seat in exchange for gold, copper, and precious gems. Recently, however, caravans have been disappearing as they pass through the desert. None of the disappearing caravans have been food caravans from the imperial seat, and Queen Daphne has become disgruntled. She has threatened to discontinue the food caravans unless her tribute resumes.
The PCs have been retained to protect this month's shipment as it passes through the desert. If it does not reach the capital, the people of Deeping Fast will surely starve.

    Background
Twenty years ago King Ryan passed beyond the Fields of Reeds (died) and left his two grown daughters to govern the realm. The eldest, Marion, had been raised from a baby to ascend the throne, but when she was presented to the high temple and the black ram was sacrificed, the omens were dire. To ward away the anger of the gods, Marion was sent into the desert and her younger sister Daphne became queen. Queen Daphne has proved to be a skilled administrator, and has pushed a number of progressive and expansionist policies.
The mines at Deeping Fast were opened for two main reasons. The first is to secure a permanent alliance with the Dwarves living in the Sunspire Mountains. The gold and copper from the mines is earmarked as gifts to impress the dwarven people. Queen Daphne intends to invite the dwarves to join her kingdom by the end of the year.
The gems from the mines are intended to support Daphne's newly opened college of arcane magic. A decade ago, the study of arcane magic was limited to the nobility and priests. The new college accepts applicants based on merit, not birth. This has been popular with the common citizens and caused angry mutterings with the nobles.

Character Creation Rules - PCs will begin the game with 32,000 exp (eight level) and 13947 gold coins to equip themselves. Stats should be rolled on four dice (drop the lowest) and placed as you see fit. Email me your characters, please, before posting them here so I can double check all of your work.

    Thanks Much
    2:12 am
Two so far, who will be next
So far, two takers on my brilliant idea. Who else? Come on, a few more and we will really have something. If you haven't posted or emailed me, you should. I promise, it won;t hurt.

23:09 until registration closes, look at the flashing lights
    Hi kids.

    How's everyone doing?

    Thats fine, just fine.

Oh, me? Well, some good and some bad, I'm afraid. I've got a class that I can't register because the enrollment is maxed out, and I'm a little stuck. Gotta talk to the Prof and an Advisor, see what I can get worked out. On the flip, tonight was the second time I was periferally involved in a moving violation. The first time, Jane may remember, I was driving her home and the guy behind us got pulled over for speeding. Being the dutiful driver I am, I pulled over too, and we waited for the five minutes for the police to finish and pull away before I finished the ride. Tonight, I was the passenger in the vehicle that got pulled over. Color me exhilarated, although the driver was understandable upset.

Anyhow, its late and I have school in the AM.

    Sleep tight, america.

    Josh
